Looking for redemption

3/12/2010
The OWLZ started off the season last weekend in Alabama going 2-3. The OWLZ just did not show up ready to play. Stepping on the field for the first time this year, the OWLZ dropped the first game to Team CCS 5-15. CCS came out hitting and hitting hard while the OWLZ were still asleep. Their was no recovering as CCS went on to end the game in 5 innings.
Game 2 would have been no easy feat on your best day. The OWLZ had to play Todd's Boys/OI. They consisted of some of the most accomplished softball players around. Mike Olive, Chad Loudon, Tommy Collier, Bill Mammo just to name a few. OI came out and put a beat down on the OWLZ real quick ending the game in the 5th also with a score of 8-18.
Game 3 - The OWLZ were upset at this point and decided it was time to step it up and win a game some way some how. Once again the bats did not show up but the gloves did. The defense held Durbin Farms to 5 runs while the OWLZ put up 7 to gain a little confidence.
Game 4 - The OWLZ were rolling now and steamrolled Cheap Seats 18 -6. Offense, Defense, attitude, everything was there and clicking. This win put the OWLZ at 2-2 and the reward was a semi final game against Todd's Boys/OI. Nice
Game 5 - Owls jumped out to 14-2 lead against OI, but a good team never loses until the last out and experience paid off for OI as they kept chipping away and then finally opened up a can of WHOOPA on the OWLZ beating them 16-26 in 6.
The OWLZ took a tie for third resulting in a cash payout of ZIP.
Offensive MVP - Caison Whatley
Defensive MVP - Robbie Henderson
Coaches MVP - Anthony Rios
Ladies MVP (for the rest of season)- Jason Hanson

The OWLZ will hit the road this weekend to Niceville Fl to take place in the first round of the Southeast Military Conference. The OWLZ will step up to the highest level this weekend and compete in the A division. Conference champion will earn a free berth
to the 2010 USSSA Military World Championship in Panama City Beach Fl August 20th.
Game Times are posted. Good luck to the OWLZ and safe travels

We lost the first one and battled back to 4th

6/22/2009
I don’t know how you guys did it, playing out of the losers bracket all day long on one of the hottest days in Montgomery and to finish 4th in one of the toughest tournaments of the year. HEART and the love of the game….. Every team in the tournament was strong going 4-2 after losing in our first game was strong. I haven’t looked in the book but we had to have a lot of guys that did pretty good. Just off the top of my head I can’t really think of too many players that struggled all day long, I think everyone had at least one big game. Johnny Hilton hit most of the day, Kersey killed it early, Caison and Higgy probably had their 600+ day as always. Mike got real hot after the 3rd game and I don’t remember Billy making many outs plus he played 5 positions. Ben and Eric had the toughest job of the day fill-in. The book is the book, it’s nice to have but the most important stat is our record, after our 0-3 start in New Covenant we are 28-8. Oh we won some pretty nice tee-shirts for our efforts on Saturday. We need the two weeks off, our next tournament will be the ASA states in Auburn 11 July. Rest up, stay hungry, hit some in the cages.
We did learn a few things this weekend. Need to take care of yourself Friday nights and you need to take care of yourself on game days by drink fluids. Jimmy was taking to the ER after our last game with heat related injuries. After 3 bags of IV fluid he was ready to go, but it was a little scary until the ambulance picked him up.
I will stay in touch over the next two weeks, Caison has the DISA guys tee-shirts….

What a long weekend

6/15/2009
The OWLZ went 8-2 this weekend winning one tournament and placing second in another. We must have either battled and played great defense or got very lucky. We only had 3 batters that hit over 500. We must have hit at some very key moments. We learned a lesson this weekend and that is a one pitch the night before a tournament is not a very good decision. Stats are below and then a message from the coach.

"The OWLZ nation is looking pretty good right now. Last week in league the team went 2-0, without me so that explains a lot about those wins. Playing in a 1 pitch on Friday night and coming back from 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh twice breaking Two Baggers hearts both times were good wins, winning the championship in a park that everyone wanted Two Baggers to win to include the umpire was very nice.
Selma, I think the games on Friday night might took a little out of us but I was proud of the way the OWLZ battled and played for the championship (5-2) for the fourth tournament in a row. Playing in 10 games in 24 hours will hopefully pay dividends down the road. We might I’ve had another OWL fall from the nest, if this has happened I hope there will be no hard feelings. I cannot deny or confirm this OWL dropping but if it happens I will let the nation know.
Big tournament this weekend, than a 2 week rest in the nest until we start playing for a state championship."

It has been confirmed about the OWL dropping.
Halloran has sent this message out

"I will confirm this with everyone, it is me...It is hard being a single dad with two kids and fighting for playing time...Only got five at bats at Districts but the ultimate disrespect was got benched for a pick up player who isn't even an OWL this past Saturday. That alone showed me what I am thought of. With Billy coming back from surgery my at bats will go down even more...I love playing with each and every one of you guys and would come play for you guys anytime..."

The OWLZ win their first tournament of the year

4/26/2009
After starting 0-3 in the pool play and getting the last place seed for the single elim the owlz stepped it up a notch. Facing first place seed Brannon Electric in the first round, the owlz were down 6 runs going into the bottom of the 7th. The owlz scored 7 in the bottom of the seventh to win by one run on an obstruction call at the plate. An elbow was thrown and tempers spiraled out of control, but the owlz walked away with a win and moved on to the next round. The second round we faced durbin farms and we ended in 5 innings 18-4. Our reward for winning that was a place in the championship game againt hose power who killed us earlier 12-2. We ended up with sticks first and score one run. Hose Power came in and score 3 in the bottom of the first. Top 2nd we scored 6 runs and held HP to a big egg. We scored another 1 in the third and the n HP came to the plate with one thing in mind and that was to start spinning our clown like a quagmeyer and they did, so we went to the 5 man and held them to 0 runs. In the 4th we marked again with 1 run and held HP to 0 runs. Top 5 we put up 6 runs and and HP scored 0. OWLZ win 15-3.

Auburn lives up to its rep

3/21/2009
1 and 2 in Auburn, our only win was a come back win in the 7th. Bottom line is we didnt hit the way a team should. We must practice hitting the way we will hit in a game. We are off this coming weekend and will play again on the 4th of April in Dothan. Thanks to our pickups today Moran and Guyer.
Moran was 3 for 9
Guyer was 3 for 10
Dont blame it on the bats and balls. Blame it on yourself and correct it.

Another Washout in Autaugaviille!!!

3/16/2009
Hey Guys,
Had a good time this weekend after the tournament, good time for the team to bond like we need to.
This weekend we will be playing in Auburn in the Mike Dixon charity tournament. For those who don’t know Mike Dixon I have pasted a link from another board for ya This is an update from his caringbridge website. Mike played with (G-Force, etc.) and this year with Full Throttle.
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/mikedixon

I have been lucky enough to play with the guy once and against the guy quite a bit, I don’t know him as a person, only as a softball player. Whatever though, he seems to be going through a tough time.

I need all of you to respond to the website email or email me ASAP. I know there are a few that aren’t going to make it this weekend. I need to start recruiting now. Roger is gone for spring break so send me all your questions.

We will have practice this Wednesday at Gunter at 5:00.

This will be our first double elim tournament and a good time to see how we do with extra pressure on us.

3/11/2009
The OWLZ went to Birmingham this weekend and finished with a 5-1 record. Scoring 111 runs and only allowing 60.
25 of those 60 were in the last game. The first tournament of the year is always a tough one and will test the toughest of teams late in the evening. That will improve as the year goes on and our stamina builds. The OWLZ showed great team chemistry and had a ton of fun. Of course they did, they were winning. How much chemistry and fun will there be if we are losing. Thats the test that we dont want to take but will eventually. We will then see what a team the OWLZ truly are. This weekend we play in Autaugaville AL. This will be a long day again and rain is expected. Be prepared to play all day. Be prepared to win. Lets continue this fight and determination to succeed every single game. Updates for this weekend will be posted as soon as I know anything. Thanks to all the players who played Saturday. Everyone gave 100%, and when some got tired and some got sick and some got hurt, the team was just as strong and just as good. That is a good feeling as a teammate.

We will have to arrive at Greensprings Park at around 9:15 to 9:30. We will leave the cracker Barrell in Prattville at 8:00. If you want to eat please be there between 7:00 and 7:15. There may not be much waiting around this tournament. Also you can not see your vehicle from the fields. I suggest not bringing the grills and stuff this weekend. Just your chairs and whatever else you want. We can grab lunch if we have time at the park or somewhere else. Please respond to the website if you are going to be there or not.

Pratice and Uniforms

2/13/2009
From Roger Day:
Sorry I was late for practice last night but I was very pleased with all of the players that did what they had to do without being told. Everyone got their swings in and hopeful worked on their weaknesses. It really feels like an adult men’s softball team. I’m hearing a lot of good chatter about winning and things like “I’ll do whatever to help this team win” . One little saying I like to live by and it is from Billy Donavon the coach of the Florida Gator basketball team. He tells his players “Don’t play for the name on your back, play for the name on the front of your jersey”
We will practice again on Tuesday and Thursday next week…..1700 hrs or earlier if some need it…

From Caison Whatley:
ON a serious note, we have 9 paid, that’s 1800 dollars Today was the hopeful order day, as we can see that wont happen.
I will order as soon as all that are gonna play have paid.
If you have or think you are getting a big sponsor, I would like to have Their business on our uniforms somewhere and that is important before I order.
