LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE

4/14/2009

Coming off a 22-run performance against last year’s champions CLC wasted no time this week, going two better as they defeated White Lightning 24-14.

As they have in previous games, CLC went quietly in the first. The bottom of the inning found the Bombers in an early hole as White Lightning scored 6 times due to timely hitting and shaky defense by the Bombers.

CLC would get 4 in the second and White Lightning would counter with two more. CLC would put up 4 more in the 3rd to tie the game, but again White Lightning would score twice to hang onto a 10-8 lead.

In the 4th, what seemed like only a matter of time, the CLC bats awoke. T.J. Harley started the inning off with a base hit up the middle. After the hit, 8 out of the next 9 CLC hitters would reach base. Chris Quick launched his third double of the game, capping off a 4-hit, 6 RBI night.

CLC would score 8 more in the 5th to put the game out of reach. Ryan Prowell came out of retirement to go 2-2 with 4 RBI. Kyle Pope also posted an impressive 5-5 evening.

With the victory CLC sits atop the standings for the spring session. The Bombers look to make it 5 straight as they take on the Ball Sluggers (3-1) next Tuesday at 8:30.

ARNOLD'S AUTO STALLS CLC BATS

10/14/2008
CLC was confident going into the final game of the 2008 campaign. But confidence quickly turned to desperation as the Bombers 3-run first inning soon became a 10-3 deficit, one they would never come back from.

CLC was only able to plate 6 runs thanks to the bats of David Brown and Franco Johnson. Brown continued his hot hitting, belting a triple and a double. Franco Johnson got back to his old ways, driving a home run over the head of the AA left fielder. As good as Brown and Johnson were, the AA bats were in another league Tuesday night giving the CLC outfield a workout, hitting the ball to all corners of the field en route to a 16-6, 5-inning victory.

“We’ll regroup and comeback next spring looking to finish what we set out to do, win a league championship. We have the talent to do that, we just came up short this time” said manager T.J. Harley after the game.

CLC will enjoy the long off season and start the 2009 season in March. Thanks to all the fans who came out and supported the team. We’ll see you next year!

PICKING UP THE PIECES

9/08/2008
CLC defeated White Lightning Tuesday night by a score of 18-1. The Bombers got off to a fast start by scoring 5 runs in the first. John Greeley led off the game with a hit followed by T.J. Harley. Singles by Rick Waugaman and Chris Quick would drive them in and the Bombers were in business early.

CLC would go on to score one in the second and two in the third. A four-run fourth put the Bombers up by 11 and the overmatched White Lightning squad could never get it going despite 5 hits.

Rookies Kyle Pope and Joe Hughbanks also contributed with their first hits as CLC Bombers.

Player of the game went to Rick Waugaman (4-4, 3 RBI, 3 R).

CLC will face the Bag Boys next Tuesday night at 9:30 PM.

HOME STRETCH

6/23/2008
With only two regular season games to play CLC looks to clinch its first-ever Cobb County Championship birth, and they can do it on Tuesday night with a win and some help.

CLC will take on the Big Sticks (1-4) at 6:30 PM. A win by CLC and a loss by the Bushwood All-Stars will put CLC in the championship game. If Bushwood wins their game, they will face CLC in a winner take all match-up next week. In theory this week’s game will have no bearing on the outcome of the season as CLC could still earn a playoff birth with a win next week, regardless what happens in the Bushwood or CLC game this week.

“We’d love to end it Tuesday night! We’ll be pulling for the [North River] Bulldogs at 9:30” said T.J. Harley in his weekly, Monday afternoon press conference. “We’ll need some help but getting it out of the way now takes a lot of pressure off of us next week. If we have to win next week to go to the championship, that’s what we’ll have to do. We’re ready either way.”

In addition to the playoff implications, the Bombers will also look to extend their 8-game winning streak. CLC will mix up the lineup a bit and go with the following:

1. Charter Foster - RC
2. T.J. Harley - LC
3. Joe Hutchinson - 2B
4. Mike Battle - 3B
5. David Brown - SS
6. Olin Arnold - P
7. Chris Quick - DH
8. Rick Waugaman - 1B
9. Ryan Prowell - RF
10. Franco Johnson - C
11. Daniel Fogel - DH/OF
12. John Greeley - LF
13. Brit Gordon - DH/OF

STILL ROLLIN'

6/14/2008
CLC defeated Arnold’s Automotive 6-5, winning their 7th straight game and improving their record to 4-0 in the summer session.

Facing a 3-0 Arnold’s Automotive team CLC came out of the box sluggish, going in order in the first. AA would score 3 in the 2nd to take an early lead. A leadoff double by Mike Battle got the Bombers going in the second. Battle was later driven in by Olin Arnold for CLC’s first run, cutting the AA lead to 3-1.

CLC would score 3 runs in the 3rd, two of them off the bat of Denny Crane who bounced a ball off the right fielder’s glove which would then go over the wall for two bases. The inning ended with the score tied at 4-4.

Both AA and CLC would get another run in the 4th keeping the game knotted at 5. T.J. Harley would run down a short fly ball in the 5th to keep things tied, and in the bottom of the 5th Harley came up with two on and two out. A bloop single to short right field would plate Rick Waugaman for the go ahead run.

CLC sealed things up in the 7th to earn their 7th straight victory and become the division’s only undefeated team.

Player of the game honors went to Mike Battle who went 3-3 with a double and an RBI.

CLC will take on The Team next Tuesday at 7:30 PM.

MAJOR LEAGUE EFFORT

6/07/2008
CLC defeated Team ROC (0-3) by a score of 14-12 as they improved their record to 3-0 in the second half.

The Bombers took the field with one mission, defeat the first half champs. After scoring only one run in the top of the first inning, CLC looked as if the task at hand might prove to me more difficult than once thought. Adding two more in the second CLC began to pick up the pace. Helped by a strong defensive effort by the entire team, ROC was held to only one run, and after 2 innings CLC held a 3-1 lead.

After adding another 4 runs in the third, CLC held onto, what looked like a comfortable lead. ROC would come back with 3 in the home half to cut the lead to 7-4.

The game progressed quickly until the top half of the 7th when CLC plated 6 runs to take a commanding 14-7 lead. But these were the defending first half champs, with former big league ball players, who literally would not go quietly. Instead of the traditional softball method of hitting the ball, ROC opted for the ‘don’t swing and try to walk’ way of doing business. A few walks, a couple bloop hits and five runs later, ROC suddenly had the tying run at the plate. With two outs, a ground out to David Brown would seal the deal and CLC had a 14-12 victory.

Player of the Game honors once again went to the CLC defense for playing a spectacular game. Pitcher Olin Arnold earned the victory and was able to throw strikes when it mattered.

The Bombers go for 7 in a row next week as they take on Arnold’s Automotive. Game time is at 6:30 PM.

CLC LOOKS TO STAY HOT

6/03/2008
CLC will look to continue its winning ways as they take on Team ROC (0-2), Tuesday night at 8:30PM. CLC was defeated by Team ROC 28-16 back on April 8. While ROC has gotten off to a slow second half, their bats are not to be taken lightly, but Manager T.J. Harley has confidence in his squad.

“We are a much better team than we were two months ago. We have what it takes to beat these guys, it’s just a matter of executing and getting off to a good start” he told reporters yesterday.

“It’s a huge game for us. The trick is going to be not getting behind against these guys. They have a potent lineup and have the ability to put teams away in a heartbeat. We have to make sure we stay ahead of the tidal wave and avoid the big inning.”

The Bombers go into Tuesday night’s game riding a 5-game winning streak. The lineup for CLC looks this way:

1.Charter Foster - RC
2.Ryan Prowell - 1B
3.Franco Johnson - C
4. Mike Battle - 3B
5.David Brown - SS
6.Olin Arnold - P
7.Chris Quick - DH
8.T.J. Harley - LC
9.Joe Hutchinson - 2B
10. Kit Walsh - LF
11. John Greeley - RF
12. Daniel Fogel - DH

PAYBACK!

5/31/2008
After a frustrating 5-4, 8-inning loss back on April Fool’s Day CLC had a score to settle, and settled it with a victory, defeating the Raiders 10-7.

The Raiders got off to a good start scoring 4 runs in the first inning. Three of those runs came off a 3-run bomb to left center field off the bat of the Raiders’ clean-up hitter. The no-doubter cleared both the fence and the fence of the field behind it. CLC would come back with 7 runs in the home half of the first to take the lead, as the Bombers batted around putting the first 7 hitters on base, including a 2-run triple by David Brown.

The score would stay knotted at 7-4 until the 5th when the Raiders would tie the game at 7-7 on two deep fly balls to the gap in center field. Again the resilient CLC offense would retaliate and again David Brown was the hero, knocking a 2-run home run over the right fielder’s head to put the Bombers ahead for good.

The Raiders would threaten again in the 7th, but with one out a crucial base running mistake by the leadoff hitter would seal it. Trying to stretch a triple into a home run, the runner was gunned down on a relay from T.J. Harley, to David Brown, who threw the runner out at the plate. A spectacular tag by Franco Johnson and the runner was dead to rights at home.

Player of the game honors went to David Brown who tripled and homered, driving in four.

The Bombers will face the first half champions, Team ROC (0-2) next week as they go for their sixth straight win. Game time is 8:30 PM. Team ROC defeated CLC 28-16 on April 8.

CLC LOOKS FOR REVENGE

5/26/2008
After getting rained out last week CLC will look for payback against the team that put their first-half title out of reach. The Raiders (1-0) defeated CLC 5-4 in 8 innings back on April 1st. That loss would eventually be the one that put CLC’s first-half title hopes to rest. Tuesday night will be all business as the Bombers look to go 2-0 and continue their undefeated second half.

NINE IS ENOUGH

5/13/2008
Although they could only field nine players the CLC bats were red hot as they took care of business, defeating the North River Bulldogs 19-9.

In the opening game of the season’s second half, CLC took its first step towards a division title by scoring 11 runs in the first two innings. They would go on to score 8 more as the CLC bats picked up right where they left off two weeks earlier.

In his first game this season Brit Gordon got right into the groove going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Shortstop Joe Hutchinson came out of his funk going 4 for 4 and driving in 3. Toward the end of the game Hutchinson experienced tenderness in his right hamstring and is listed as day-to-day.

Player of the game honors went to Hutchinson who went 4 for 4 and drove in 3.

CLC will go for its 5th straight win as they take on the Bushwood All-Stars next Tuesday at 8:30 PM. CLC defeated Bushwood 22-12 back on March 25.

CLC SAWS OFF BIG STICKS

5/12/2008
CLC took care of business Tuesday night as they defeated Big Sticks 18-4. In typical CLC fashion, the Bomber bats started out cold as the night air.

The CLC bats were only able to plate 2 runs in the first. Big Sticks would tie things up in the top of the 2nd, scoring two runs off two hits and two walks. CLC got it going in the second with a triple by Olin Arnold, followed by back-to-back doubles by John Greeley and Chris Quick. CLC scored 5 in the 2nd to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

4 runs in the 3rd and 7 in the 4th put CLC ahead for good and the the Bombers had an easy 18-4 victory.

Unfortunately for CLC, both Arnold’s Automotive and Team ROC would win on Tuesday night, putting CLC at the back end of the tie breaker. CLC also comes up short in run differential which is also used to break a tie.

CLC will get a much needed week off before starting the second half of the season in two weeks. CLC hopes to earn a second-half title and a trip to the Men’s Major Title Game.

The Player of the Game went to the CLC defense, allowing only one error in the game. Ryan Prowell called it “possibly the best defensive lineup CLC has ever put on the field.”

NO PROBLEM

4/27/2008
CLC got off to a great start and had no trouble taking care of The Team (0-6), Tuesday night. The Team was overmatched from the start by CLC’s bats and could never keep the pace as the Bombers cruised to their second straight victory.

CLC plated 9 runs in the first to take an early lead. Two first inning CLC errors and 3 hits led to 4 Team runs but their bats would be silenced for the remainder of the game. CLC would score one each in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th maintaining a comfortable lead. Olin Arnold held The Team bats in check all night, along with the CLC defense, who would commit only one more error for the remainder of the game.

Seven CLC runs in the 6th put the game out of reach and the Bombers had a 19-4 (run rule) victory.

Player of the game went to pitcher Olin Arnold who allowed 4 runs and drove in 6.

CLC will finish out the first half of the season next Tuesday as they face (2-4) Big Sticks. First pitch is at 9:30 PM.
